PROJECTS

Title: Restoring Degraded Sections of Michelago, Ryrie and Margaret's Creeks
Funding: NHT Murray-Darling 2001 Program
Year: 2000-2002
Description: The Michelago, Ryrie and Margarets Creek above the town of Michelago in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment are degrading as a result of eroding streambanks, declining riparian native vegetation, the spread of exotic vegetation and stock access. The aim of this project is to restore a 4 kilometre section where the Michelago, Ryrie and Margarets Creeks converge by fencing off sections to manage stock access, stabilising eroded areas and revegetating with a diversity of native riparian vegetation. This will lead to a number of broad environmental outcomes including reduced stream bank erosion, improved water quality, retention of riverine habitat and reduced localised flooding.

Title: Restoring the Michelago Creek Catchment
Funding: NHT NRM Program
Year: 2002/03
Description: This project will address 4 sites of severe streambank erosion and other unstable areas along the Michelago Creek through low-cost erosion control works. 2.5 km along the creek will be fenced to exclude livestock 3 watering points will be established and riparian areas will be revegetated. This should prevent further streambank and in-stream degradation in future. This project will create linkages (over two properties) to previous creek restoration and enhancement works (willow control fencing and revegetation) lower in the catchment. These works will reduce the impact of large erosion events on stream health and water quality and provide riparian buffers and habitat along the creek.

Title: Michelago Creek Restoration Stage 4
Funding: NHT NRM Program
Year: 2003/04
Description: This project will completely remove invasive willow species from the Michelago Creek stabilise an actively eroding bank by installing gabions and erect 250 m of fencing to exclude stock. It will remove woody weeds and replace them with 250 non-invasive native species. Approximately 160 m of bank work will be completed and willows and woody weeds removed from 4 km of creek extending from the railway bridge to the Murrumbidgee River.
