UMLC PROJECTS
Title: Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare Coordinator
Funding: Murray-Darling 2001 Program
Year: 1997 - 1999
Description: To employ a Landcare Coordinator for the Upper Murrumbidgee.
Title: Upper Murrumbidgee Streamside Revegetation
Funding: Murray-Darling 2001 Program
Year: 1999 -02001
Description: Rivers and streams in the Upper Murrumbidgee catchment are degrading as a result of the spread of exotic vegetation, declining native vegetation and stock access. In particular, seeding willows have become a major problem with the potential to severly impact on the stability and ecology of riparian systems. The aim of this project is to restore the Upper Murrumbidgee River & its tributaries by removing problem willows and replacing them with a diversity of native riparian vegetaion as well as fencing off sections to manage stock access. This will lead to a number of broad environmental outcomes including reduced stream bank erosion, improved water quality, retension of riverine habitat and reduced localised flooding.
Title: Linking Quality Remnants in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment
Funding: NHT Bushcare Program
Year: 2000 - 2002
Description: The aim of this project is to enhance a total of 20ha of cleared land, riparian vegetation and remnant vegetation. Building on existing surveys remnant vegetation on eight priority sites will be improved and extended using fencing, signage, direct seeding and tubestock.
Title: Capacity Building for Upper Murrumbidgee Wetlands - Fact Sheets for Rural Landholders
Funding: NHT NRM Program
Year: 2003/04
Description: This project will develop fact sheets about wetlands for the large diverse population of rural landholders in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment (UMC) designed to enhance their understanding of wetland values and benefits and provide practical advice about on-ground conservation and management of wetlands. Local wetland experts will assist with regionally specific content and a community workshop will be convened to test its suitability and practicality for landholders and landcare groups. Coverage will include: what is a wetland (Upper Murrumbidgee types); why are wetlands important in the landscape (including cultural values); identifying wetlands on your property; benefits of retaining/constructing wetlands on your property; simple management regimes; and regional wetland contacts and management assistance. The fact sheets will be presented in an engaging non-scientific style using suitable images as appropriate and distributed widely throughout the UMC. The number of fact sheets to be produced will depend on content design and distribution requirements.
Title: Managing for Drought Recovery Fact Sheets for Rural Landholders
Funding: NHT NRM Program
Year: 2005/06
Description: This project will develop fact sheets about drought preparedness and recovery for rural landholders in the ACT and surrounding areas.
Title: Riparian Restoration in the Yass River Sub-Catchment
Funding: NHT NRM Program
Description: This project will work with landholders in the Yass River catchment to undertake strategic restoration of riparian zones on private rural properties adopting the approach used by the award winning 'Bidgee Banks' project. Five landholders who have sites that are considered high priority will undertake on ground works including a total of 6.5 km of fencing, planting 1500 tubestock to revegetate the area installation of alternate stock watering points and erosion control along riparian zones. Longer term outcomes will include: improved water quality by reducing soil loss and nutrification; increased biodiversity by protecting and enhancing remnant riparian vegetation.
Title: Implementing Murrumbidgee Catchment Action Plan Upper Murrumbidgee Co-ordinator
Funding: NHT National Landcare Program
Description: To implement the Murrumbidgee Catchment Action Plan in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment (upstream of the ACT border) by coordinating a series of on ground works which address priority catchment issues. Encourage and coordinate community groups to undertake on ground works in the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment which address the priority natural resource managment issues as identified by the Murrumbidgee Catchment Action Plan. The major outcomes of this project will be a series of strategic, well planned, implemented and maintained on ground works. This project will be the catalyst for environmental change in this area leading to enhanced native vegetation and therefore biodiversity, improved water quality, decreased rate of soil erosion and reduced weed infestations.
